Academic Integrity

Students are expected to abide by the rules and regulations of Chulalongkorn University. In particular, students are expected to adhere to the highest standards of academic integrity. Please carefully read the Academic Integrity Policy of the University of Victoria, one of the partner institutions of Chulalongkorn University. The instructor applies these standards in this course.

Grading

  • (5 marks ) Short case study assignment due Thursday, October 13, 2011. If you have any questions about this assignment, you are very welcome to email the instructor. See the case study assignment (.pdf). See the criteria for grading the case study

  • (10 marks) Class attendance and participation . Criteria for evaluation of this component of the course include on-time attendance at all classes, good class preparation, attentiveness, respectful listening to all class members, and cooperation with all others in class. Students may also be requested to make short, informal presentations on readings or findings of class exercises. To ensure that students feel comfortable speaking out and practicing, students are not graded on their substantive performance in class presentations, discussions, practice exercises or role-plays.

  • (5 marks) Class survey and discussion on culture and negotation.
    • Read: Salacuse, Jeswald W. “The top ten ways that culture can affect your negotiation.” Ivey Business Journal (September-October 2004), http://wwwold.iveybusinessjournal.com/view_article.asp?intArticle_ID=514
    • Complete the online survey, print your completed survey, and bring it to class on October 19: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NBZMDDN
    • On October 19 in class, you will be asked to participate in a discussion and a possible roleplay based on the article and survey. Students who have not read the Salacuse article or completed the survey find it challenging to participate effectively in this discussion.

  • (15%) Short essay due October 25 at 8:45 am (electronic submission only)
    • Please write an essay on one of the following topics (or other topic agreed in consultation with the professor):
      • "Ethical challenges for negotiators: Professional responsibility of lawyers", or
      • "Challenges for lawyer negotiators in addressing and avoiding corruption."
      • If you wish to write on another topic, please consult the instructor.
    • As resources, please use relevant course readings and other readings of your choice.
    • Length: approximately 750 words (excluding references and footnotes).
    • Due by electronic submission by Tuesday October 25, 2011, at 8:45 am. Turn in a hard copy to the LLM office any time October 25. Hard copy submission not required.
    • Write about the topic in the light of the reading and all other relevant required course readings and other optional readings.
    • Please express your own opinions, and support your opinions from the readings you have chosen.
    • Please feel free to discuss your topic with the instructor and others students.
    • Please adhere to the University of Victoria policy on Academic Integrity. Students who submit assignments that do not adhere to this policy, or which are identical or nearly identical to those of other students will receive no credit for this assignment.

  • (15%) Final Examination will be held Friday October 21, 2011 from 9 am to noon. This examination covers the whole of the ADR course. The negotiation portion of the exam will be approximately 20 minutes, and will be open book. The examination (final version) is now online (.doc)

Class Notes

The instructor will make every effort to put powerpoint notes online prior to the class. Short practice roleplay scenarios may also be placed here so that you have time to prepare before class. Please check this space each day.
